The second "three month" period of 1997 included the lead up of the general election with the contesting parties carrying out their election campaigns. The general election itself was carried out on 29th May 1997. In fact, the monetary and credit expansion during April-June 1997 was bigger than that in the previous "three mont" period. Indonesian people have grown accustomed to the activities surrounding election day (this is the sixth general election since Indonesia started its development plan in 1969/1970); moreover all possible source of trouble that might have occured were anticipated by the government allowing the political situation in general to remain stable and under control
