Isi artikelViewing economic history as a series of investigations into meeting people's material needs and the social challenges of their age, rather than as a step-bystep accumulation of scientific knowledge, the author doubts that any truly great achievements in economic thought have been made in the last 50 years. He believes this may be "a consequence of living in a period of transition" when the hidden problemd of the maket system are giving way to those of a nascent "planning system." Renowned worldwide as an eklegant stylist in economic writing, Robert L. Heilbroner lives in New York where he is professor of economics at the New School for Social Research, from which he received a doctorate in 1963. Among his best known books, all of which have received wide acclaim, are The Worldly Philosophers, An Inquiry Into the Human Prospect, and most recently Beyond Boom and Crash.
