Isi artikelAppointed by President Carter chairman of the countr's top U.S. banking authority, the independent Federal Reserve Board, early in 1978, G. William Miller quickly won a reputation as a staunch foe of inflation, earning him the confidence of the administration and of the U.S. business commodity. In this interview with a well-known Washington television commentator, Mr. Miller concedes that the persistently high U.S inflation rate has contributed to the decline of the dollar on the world markets. But he believes that with an attack on the "fundamentals," and cooperation between Congress and the White House, inflation can be brought down to acceptable levels in gradual steps over a reasonable period of time. Trained as a lawyer, Mr. Miller headed a large U.S. multinational company, Textron, for 17 years. During that time he also served for six years as a director of the regional New England Federal Reserve Bank, headquarters in Boston. As chairman of the Federal; Reserve System, he succeeds Arthur F. Burns, who served in that position for eight years.
