Isi artikel
This prominent academic and government economist views as among the costs of inflation the redistribution of income and wealth to no economic purpose and the reduction of the level, or rate of growth, of production. He concludes that while some countries have survivied inflation rates of as high as 150 percent for decades, the "immensely more complex and completely market-oriented economies of the major Wetern countries, with their greater dependence on long-term contracts and their vastly more intricate financial markets" could not survive as well under similar conditions. Born in the midwestern State of Indiana, Dr. Ackley obtained a doctorate in economis at the University of MIchigan in 1940, and was chairman of the school's economics department from 1954 to 1961. He subsequently became U.S. Ambassador for Italy and in 1969 returned to the University of Michigan as professor of political economy. Dr. Ackley is also a member of several high-level government consultative groups and is the author of numerous books and articles on economics.
