Isi artikelEnterobacter sakazakii is a motile peritrichous, gram-negative rod from the family Entererobacteriaceae. E. sakazakii is a rare, but life-threatening cause of neonatal meningitis, sepsis, and necrotizing enterocolitis. In general, the reported case-fatality rate varies from 49-80% among newborns diagnosed with this type of severe infection. Dried infant formula has been identified as a potential source of the organism in both outbreaks and sporadic cases. Neonatal infections with E. sakazakii have been associated with contaminated powdered formula products, but other environmental sources of contamination are possible.
