Isi artikelIn this unusually broad-scope assesment of the computer revolution, the author contends that from an economic standpoint, the electronic computer is simply the most recent in a long line of new technologies that increase productivity and cause a gradual shift from manufacturing to service employment. He sees no evidence that the computer :dehumanizes" work. and even more significant, he concludes, because of the advanced computer's capabilities of thinking logically, man is forced to change his view of himself-to realize that the mind can be explained in terms of natural mechanisms. Dr. Simon is presently professor of computer science and psychology at the Carnegie-Mellon University. A former member of the President's Science Advisory Committee, he has authored or coauthored a number of books dealing with human behavior, automation, management and administration.
