Isi artikelPresident carter has set agoal of reducing the U.S. inflation rate by two percentage points by the end of 1979, a task he concedes is difficult. For varied views on what the United States should-and should not-do about the problem, Fortune brought together two former chairmen of the Council of Economic Advisers, Republican Alan Greenspan and Democrat Arthur Okun. Despite their differences, they agree taht the current inflation rate is too high. Where they disagree markedly is on what should be done to get it down. Dr. Greenspan, a native New Yorker who heads a business consulting firm, was chairman of the Council under President Ford. A graduate of New York University with a master's degree in economics, he founded his firm while still in his twenties. His recently was awrded a doctor's degree from his alma mater. Dr. Okun, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, served on the Council from 1964 to 1969-the last year as chairman. Previously, he had been a professor at Yale University and is perhaps best known for his formulation in 1961 of a statistical equation describing the relationship between changes in the uneployment rate and the overall level of economic activity.
