Isi artikelDespite certain reservations and qualifications, a Nobel prizewinning economist explains why he believes that economists have exercised a good influence on public policy, particularly in explaining the benefits of free trade. An internationallyknown economist, educator, and author, Milton Friedman was associated with the University of Chicago as a professor of economics for almost three decades before hios retirement in 1979. He has served on a number of governmental commissions, including, most recently, the President's Economic Policy Advisory Board. In 1976, Friedman was awarded the Nobel Prize in economics for his work in consumption analysis and monetary history and theory and for demonstrating the complexity of stabilization policy. He is currently a senior research fellow with th Hoover Institution, a private public policy research organization.
