Abstract
Critical thinking is considered as a factor that needs to be integrated in to education, because the objective of education is not only to transfer the content of the subject but also to give the students the ability to think about how to use the content. Critical thinking also has a strong relation to writing, as both skills enhance each other.However, the education in Indonesia still lacks the promotion of critical thinking.This research aims to find out how and to what extent the instructors of academic writing in the English Department of Atma Jaya University have implemented elements that promote critical thinking in their writing classes. The data in this research were obtained through observation, interview and questionnaires. This research concluded that although the writing instructors generally hold a positive view towards critical thinking and its elements they did not fully introduce the whole elements in class. The questionnaires revealed that the students thought that their instructors encouraged some of the elements, while other elements were not much emphasized.
