The central nervous system gathers the information which is conveyed by our senses. It constructs a representation of the outside world within us, and cordinates our movements and our bodily functions. It is also the material substrate of the so-called higher brain functions like thought, memory, and consciousness. Research in the Neurosciences during the last century, particulary during the last 50 years, has revealed many mechanism by which information is received, by which signals are propagated, and which information is processed and stored
