The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) can caus a wie spectrum of clinical manifestations, ranging from the acute infection, to persistent generalized lymphadenopathy (PGL/LAS) to AIDS-related complex (ARC) and the full blown AIDS. In certain patients the various stages of the infection can present progressively, whereas in others the opportunistic infections and neoplasms of AIDS may be the first clinical manifestation of HIV-infected patients.
