During the 1970s, the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) began to spread, silently and unnoticed, around the world. Therefore, at thr time AIDS was first recognized, in 1981 in the United States, HIV infection were also present on four other continents. The discovery of HIV in 1983 and the widespread availability of HIV antibody testing in early 1985 led rapidly to recognition of the global scope of HIV infection and stimulated a worldwide and unprecedented response to prevent and control AIDS.
