The reason given, of course, is that their " quality of life " is perceived as having deteriorated to the degree that "life is not worth living". What is behind this frightening situation? Many variables, of course, but for our purposes here I will focus on three: skewed interpretations of the concept, "quality of life"; cure of AIDS perceived exclusively in physiological terms; reductionist understanding of the purpose of life.
