The Asian region is an exception to the global trend towards abolition of death penalty. Death penalty is supported by the majority of governments in Asia although it was abolished in Cambodia, Nepal, Timor Leste, and the Philippines. The Korean Penal Code and special criminal acts currently provide capital punishment for ninety-six offenses. Since Liberation from the Japanese Occupation in 1948, 1998 convicts have been executed in the Republic of Korea[here in after Korea or South Korea]. The most typical way to execute is by hanging for normal convicts, while execution for convicts who violated the Military Penal Code are is by shooting. |
