Despite great expectations, therapeutic angiogenesis with the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and related molecules for the treatment of ischemic heart and peripheral arterial occlusive disease has thus far failed in the clinic, so alternative strategies to stimulate revascularization of ischemic tissues are required.
