More than a year has passed since my article," Maruyama Masao'o hippatakitai" (I want to Slap Maruyama Masao), was printed here in the pages of Ronza (January 2007). Last fall, my book Wakamono o migoroshi ni suru kuni (A Country That Leaves Its Young in the Lurch), which included that essay, hit the shelves. Toward the end of the yaer, in the December 7 issue of Shukan Asahi, the writer Takashi Gen ichiro reviewed this book. He noted that he had assigned my earlier piece as reading for students 'essays were generally critical of me: they wrote that I was "making no effort in life," that I "should be working harder," that I was "trying to place the blame on others "for the situation in which I found myself, and that I "should be studying to gain certifications."
