The phonological and morphological environments directly affect the sounds that undergo change. The syntactic environment, however, may either directly or indirectly affect such sounds. In a number of languages, for example, a segmental change may occur because the sound occupies object position, but it may not occur if the sound occupies subject position. This seems to indicate that the syntactic structure may affect the phonological structure.
