I have benefitted greatly from the reflections of Ignace Verhack, Garrett Barden, Cyril O’Regan and Arnold Burms, and I thank them for their fine work. The excellences of their respective discussions have helped me to look again with fresh eyes at Ethics and the Between. I have no less benefitted from the fact that their contributions are philosophical essays valuable in themselves, that tell us something of importance about their own thinking. I will offer later some remarks in response to each of them with references to the specifics of their contributions, but here I would like to say something in introduction of Ethics and the Between, and, as I will explain below, with the issue of the measure of the ethical in mind.
