Isi artikelNo matter how necessary and informative large-scale statistical studies may be. they elicit a need for complementary data from small-scale, more detailed research. By way of illustration, we cite the results of a survey of the labour market situation of poor people in Belgium (Spring 1994). A random sample of 273 adults living in poverty was questioned, via intermediaries from the ATD-Fourth World Movement and similar organisations. Only people ‘who wanted to work and can work’ were included in the sample. Consequently, the category ‘out of the labour market’ is theoretically excluded a priori. We shall see, however, that many persons would be classified as such in large-scale surveys using administrative definitions of the respondents’ labour market situation.
