Bioethics is not immune to trendy issues. But if it were not for fads in public concern, media attention, and political rhetoric, some philosophical and moral issues essential for the well-being and protection of individuals and cultures would not be addressed intensively and timely enough. Scientific breakthroughs in molecular genetics and gene technology will have revolutionary impact on culture, philosophy, ethics, and education, as well as on individual self-understanding and self-determination around the globe. Indeed, we may face a second Copernican revolution in selfunderstanding.
