Isi artikelEach country which abuses psychiatry seems to have its own system — or set of systems — for doing so. The USSR was the most prominent and the most insidious. Others, as this book indicates, are equally nasty or more so. The particular problem in the Soviet Union was that a willingness to treat political dissenters as insane was supported by two superficially plausible lines of reasoning. The first was that anyone prepared to pit his foolhardy strength against the social forces and massive powers of punishment in the Co .unist State must be, at the least, a bizarre eccentric, and in all probability, an unfortunate madman. It transpired that many people who undertook this course such as Grigorenko, Bukovsky and Gluzman, were eminently sane, strong-minded individuals. But few knew that at the time, and the impression of unfortunate irrational idealists tackling impossible odds gained some credence.
