Isi artikelIn indonesia, the prevalence of coronary heart disease (CHD) was increased. It currently became the main cause of mortality. Unhealthy dietary pattern as the most determinant of atherosclerosis through the increasing of plasma LDL, will be worsen by the presence of free radical such as reactive oxygen species (ROS) that led to accumulation of atherosclerosis plaques. THe negative effects of free radical can be inhibited by antioxidant. Lycopene is a strong antioxydant that able to neutralize free radicals, especially oxygen derived free radicals. this study aimed to assess the effect of tomato paste containing lycopene to total foam cell. lycopene has the role to prevent artericoronaria related to atherosclerosis. The most lycopene source is tomato products. This study was a laboratory experimental study with randomized control group-post test design. Twenty randomly selected rats, divided into 5 treatment groups, group P 1 (normal diet treatment), P2 (atherogenic diet treatment), P3 (atherogenic diet and addition 0.001 d/days of tomato pasta treatment), P4 (atherogenic diat and addition 0.02 g/days of tomato pasta treatment) P5 (atherogenic diet and addition 0.04 g/days of tomato pasta treatment). Body weight and total foam cells in rat's intima aorta layer. One way ANOVA statistical analysis showed there was no different in increasing of body weight and energy intake among groups treatment (p<0,05). however, there was a significant difference in protein and fat intakes, average foam cells of rat's aorta intima (p<0,05). The higher the amount of tomato pasta, the lower total of foam cells. Tukey's test showed that the difference among groups in of total foam cells was happened in group (atherogenic diet and addition 0.04 g/days tomato pasta treatment), but not differentin group (normal diet treatment). The main challenge today is to study the difference in effectiveness between pure lycopene substrate and lycopene on tomato products.
