Isi artikel
Under what conditions is it rational to from an intention? And, one formed, under what conditions would it be rational to reconsider it? These question are at the center of recent so-called historical theories of rational choice, such as that defended by Michael Bratman. These questions are relevant not only to our understanding of intention and reconsideration but also to the discussion of vatious paradoxes of instrumental retionality, such as the Paradox of Deterrence introduced by Gregory Kavka. Furthermore, they are also relevant to the recent contractarian attempt of David Gauthier to develop a theory of rational choice which implies it could be rational to act morally, even when doing so involves constraining the promotion of one's interests. My aim in this article is to use the historical approach to develop what I believe to be a plausible contractarian account of rational choice.
