Isi artikel
In 1973 Brian Barry wrote that " a liberal must take his stand on the proposition that some ways of life, some types of character, are more admirable than others, whatever may be the majority opinion in any society." I cannot resist quoting Barry's memorable continuation of this train of thought: "Liberalism rests on a vision. It exalts self-expression, self-mastery and control over the enviroment, natural and social; the active pursuit of knowledge and the clash of ideas; the acceptance of personal responsibility for the decisions that shape one's life. For those who cannot take freedom it provides alcohol, and so on, endlessly, but it cannot by its nature provide certain kinds of psychological security. Like any creed it can be neither justified nor condemned in terms of anything beyond it. It is itself an answer to the unanswerable but irrepssible question: 'What is the meaning of life?" This was written by way of objection againts John Rawl's doctrine of neutrality on the good, and by way of doubt the role this doctrine played in his original position derivation of principles of justice.
