Isi artikelMichael Oakeshott belonged to that small group of twentieth-century political philosophers who were ambitious enough to follow their great predecessors in developing a carefully worked out and comprehensive philosophy of political life. Deeply dissatisfied with the dominant philosophical and political trends of his times, he largely ignored his contemporaries and turrned for guidance and inspiration to the great political philosophers of the past, especially Plato, Aristotle, Hobbes, and Hegel, in his view the greatest of them all. He deeply meditated on the structure and content of their thought, and over time worked out a political philosophy of his own that combined Plato's and Hegel's conceptions of philosophy with Hobbes's theory of civil society and Aristotle's theory of practical, especially political, reason. Since he did not belong to a single philosophical tradition, he has proved extremely difficult to classify and been subject to much misunderstanding.
