Isi artikelThe history of exploitation in biomedical research (e.g., the Nazi experiments and the Tuskegee syphilis trials) has left a legacy of concern for the protection of research subjects. In addition to documents, such as The Declaration of Helsinki, that offer general guidelines for the protection of research subjects, federally funded research in the United States is heavily regulated to protect research subjects. The Code of Federal Regulation gives specific requirements that must be followed, including the requirement that institutions in which federally funded research is conducted have an Institutional Review Board (IRB) to oversee such research. The government issued IRB Guidebook offers specific guidelines for the responsibilities of IRBs with respect to their oversight duties. These efforts are, in the United States, coordinated through the Office of Human Research Protection.
