It may seem surprising that in 1966, in A Short History of Ethics Alasdair MacIntyre could note the lack of influence had by John Dewey on Anglo-American ethics of the twentieth century, and could fail to note the name of any other classical American pragmatist (MacIntyre, 1966, p. 253). This certainly does not characterize the intellectual climate of the past fifteen years. In that time, classical American pragmatism, particularly the work of Dewey, Peirce, and James, has become an increasingly important resource for philosophy, with implications both for theoretical questions regarding truth, justification, and method, and for practical concerns, including recent developments in law, political theory, and ethics, and by extension bioethics. Indeed, perhaps nowhere has pragmatism gained as great a toehold as in the field of bioethics. Here, proponents of American pragmatism have seemed to endorse the usual methods of clinical problem solving, while also claiming to provide the theoretical resources for self-understanding and critical scrutiny of such practices. The aspirations of pragmatism’s proponents reach simultaneously into political theory to support particular policy initiatives, into philosophy of science, promising important insights into the nature of health and disease, and into the clinic, resolving controversies while clarifying the physician/patient relationship. These are significant aspirations, which have not gone without critical scrutiny (Tollefsen, 2000).
