Isi artikel
There is adoctrine abroad in moral philosophy that has been very widely accepted and rarely questioned. This is proposition that the motive of an action never determines whether it is right or wrong. In present article I examine this proporsition in detail. I review the arguments of the principal authorities who discussed it, as well as the meaning of the term's 'rightness' and 'motivate'. The main conclusions that I reach is that motives do in fact sometimes affect the deontic status of an action. I go on to explain where the confusions exist in the arguments of the philosophers who have denied this. Its startling to see a very distuished collection of moral philosophers err on so simple a point, but the evindence for this claim is offered below.
