Isi artikelModesty has turned out to be a surprisingly interesting virtue-or vice, depending on one's theoretical proclivities. Some years ago I offered an account of modesty which charaterizes modesty as involving some incorrect belief-actual ignorance-on the part of the modest agent. In a recent article , G.F. Schueler present an intriguing new account of modesty and its value, offering an alternative to my belief-based account of the trait. In this article I would like to repond to Schueler's criticisms of my view by offering an advance on my previous analysis. In addtion, I will argue that Schueler's account has some fairly serious flaws of its own.
