Isi artikelAs construed by the majority of its current supporters, egalitarianism ac¬commodates choice and responsibility. This is evident from representative statements of the basic egalitarian principle such as: “It is had- unjust and unfair-for some be worse off than others [through no fault or choice of their own].”’1 Also, “[Egalitarianism’s] purpose is to eliminate involuntary disadvantage, by which I (stipulatively) mean disadvan tage for which the sufferer cannot be held responsible, since it does not appropriately reflect choices that he has made or would make.”2 It fol¬lows that, for most contemporary egalitarians, inequalities of outcome need not be bad.
