The aim of the study is to find the out the original Indonesian forms of the it-constructions which are found in the English texts, due to the facts that there are possibilities of expressing certain Indonesian syntactic structures by certain types of the it-constructions in English. The problems arise from the facts that (i) Indonesian does not have a non-human third pronoun like it in English, (ii) Indonesian does not need a dummy subject to be presented structurally to make a sentence grammatical, and (iii) there are variety of expressions of the it-construction in Indonesian. The analysis is carried out by using two kinds of parameters, that is, (1) pronominalization, and (2) change of construction. In terms of pronominalization, it is found that the it-construction, which is pronominalized (+ pron), occurs in two kinds of construction, i.e., (i) the same construction of pronominalization and (ii) different construction of pronominalization. While the one, which is not pronominalized (- pron), occurs in no equivalent construction. In terms of change of construction, it is found that the if-construction, which does not undergoes a change of construction (-change), occurs only in a construction classified in the same construction of pronominalization. While the other, which undergoes a change of construction (+change), occurs in two types of construction, namely: (i) different construction of pronominalization, and (ii) no equivalent construction. |
