In Political Liberalism, John Rawls describes the central challenge facing contemporary liberal democracies thus: "How is it posibble for there to exist over time a just and stable society of free and equal citizens, who remain profoundly divided by reasonable religious, philosophical, and moral doctrines?" While Rawls believe that solution to this challenge outlined in his recent work improves significantly on that which he had offered more than two decades earlier in A Theory of Justice, in at least one critical respect his position remain unchanged.
