The aim of this discussion is to consider the view advanced by Annette Baier, Richard Rorty, and Judith Shklar that a liberal is one who believes that cruelty is the worst thing we do. It will be argued that cruelty is not the worst thing we do and that someone really committed to his view would tend to be a conservative rather than a liberal.
