Dry or wet ground soybean containing genetically modified Roundup Ready (RUR) soybean was heated in microwave, oven or autoclave. Other soybean seed samples containing RUR soybean were processed into tempe by soaking, dehulling, boiling, followed by Rhizopus sp. inoculation and fermentation during 48 hours. Two different Lateral Flow Strip test kits were used to detect the genetically modified roundup ready soybean after heating or tempe processing. It was found that both kits can detect the RUR soybean in dry ground soybean containing 0.1% of RUR soybean even after heating in microwave for 60 minutes or in oven at 105oC for 60 minutes. In contrast, both kits failed to detect 100% of RUR soybean in heated wet ground soybean, in boiled soybean, in tempe or in dry or wet ground soybean after autoclaving at 121oC for 15 minutes. The data show that wet heated processed or fermented RUR soybean was not detected by the lateral flow strip and that additional technology has to be used to assay those foodstuffs for the present of GMO. |
