Abstract
Street foods represent to foods and beverages prepared by vendors in streets or other public places, i. e. schools. Unaware street food vendors and customers of food safety issues perceived street foods to be a potential major public risk. Street foods contaminated with toxigenic Vibrio cholerae may lead to serious food poisoning of school-age children. In this study, 17 isolates of V. cholerae were obtained from nine (45 %) contaminated of total twenty street foods samples collected in Jakarta. Five (29 %) were confirmed to be V. cholerae O1, serotype Ogawa using biochemical tests and serological identification. Of the 17 V. cholerae isolates, when evaluated for antibiotic resistance, proved to be resistant to ampicillin (47 %), trimethoprim (35 %), tetracycline (17.6 %), and streptomycin (17.6 %). All 17 of V. cholerae isolates were then detected for the presence of class 1 integrons using specific 5’ Conserved Segment (CS) and 3’ CS PCR primers. A class 1 integrons bearing streptomycin/spectinomycin resistant gene cassette of aadA1c were discovered. The integron finding on isolate Vc25n may leads to horizontal transfer of antibiotic resistant genes to other bacteria.
