Abstract
The purpose of this case study is to obtain data on how the native American English speakers in Jakarta use the directness and indirectness in directives in their relationship within the family, the members of the American community, and the Indonesian community represented by the office and home staff as well as the outsiders. The investigation is based on Blum-Kulka et al’s (1984) Nine Request Strategy Types framework which was developed from Ervin Tripp's (1976) Six Types of Directives. This research has shown that most of the directive strategies used were in the form of Query Preparatory or in Blum-Kulka's term, conventionally indirect requests. This is consistent with the findings in other studies where native speakers of English tend to realize high percentages of the same types of speech acts. However this research has yielded another finding, that males' directives were not always more direct than females'. Indirectness was also found in the home domain, by both female and male. Imperatives were used considerably in the home domain within the family interaction. It was interesting that these expatriates did not use imperatives in giving orders to the Indonesian staff as expected. It showed that Brown and Levinson's (1978) notion that increased levels of social distance between interlocutors resulting in increased levels of indirectness in speech act realizations did not always apply to any situations.
