Abstract
With current database technology trends, there are increasing needs to handle schema changes, to restructure data, and to query schemas in new applications, such as e-commerce, schema browsing, and data warehousing. Traditional query languages offer little help, because they do not allow queries to quantify over schema components, such as relation names and attribute names. Higher-order query languages, originally proposed to overcome limitations of traditional query languages in manipulating multiple databases, have been found to also play important roles in handling the above needs of new applications. In this thesis, we consider the requirements of new applications, review higher-order query languages in the literature, and employ SchemaSQL, a higher-order query language, as a vehicle to show how these requirements can be met. We also adopt SchemaSQL as an example to give a full investigation of implementation strategies for higher-order queries with fixed output schemas. This includes identification of issues, implementation architecture, relaxation of constraint checking proposed in early work, presentation of a simple and efficient non-intrusive algorithm for processing higher-order queries with fixed output schemas in a single database, and implementation of the algorithm for SchemaSQL on top of DB2. There are three main contributions in this thesis. The first is to identify the needs of new applications and show that higher-order query languages can meet these needs. The second is to identify the major issues in processing higher-order queries with fixed output schemas. The third is to present a simple and efficient algorithm with relaxed constraint checking for processing higher-order queries with fixed output schemas and to implement it for SchemaSQL in a non-intrusive way on top of DB2.
