Isi artikelBACKGROUND : Patients with orthostatic hypotension usually have problem in walking, fall tendency and syncope, coronary event and stroke. Sodium may have a role in orthostatic hypotension. This study aims to reveal the correlation between orthostatic hypotension and serum sodium in elderly. METHOD : The subjects of the study were the elderly who fulfilled the study criteria. systolic and diastolic blood pressure measurement was conducted on supine and standing position. A blood sample was taken for serum sodium. RESULTS: There were 70 elderly subjects enrolled into the study which consist of 51 female (72.9%) and 19 male (27.1%), and we found 19 subjects (27.1%) were having orthostatic hypotension. Hyponatremia, normonatremia, and hypernatremia were found in 3 (4.2%), 54 (77.2%), and 13 (18,6%) subjects, respectively. There was no significant correlation between hyponatremia and orthostatic hypotension (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION : Most elderly (77.2%) in this study were normonatremic. There was no significant correlation between hyponatremia and orthostatic hypotension.
