Isi artikel
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), also known as Major Depression, is a psychiatric syndrome characterized with pervassive impairment in mood, sleep, appetite, energy, motivation, hedonic willing, and throught process. Spesific pathogen causes depression is still unknown, but the involvement of genetic, environment, and neurobiologic factors have been widely accepted. Although lots of neurotransmitter and neurohormone such as nor-epinephrine, dopamin, and thyroid hormone have been linked with the pathophysiology of depression, latest research has shown that the disturbance at serotonin (5HT) system and Hypothalamus - Pituitary - Adrenal (HPA) Axis are the both consistently neurobiologic changes related with mood disorder. Newest report has also shown that there is a correlation between MDD and permanent hypocampus volume loss. The excessive of hypocampus neuron death caused by hypocampus volume loss and depression which is correlated with the hypocampus athropy caused by hypersecretion of glucocorticoid, a steroid produced by adrenal glands during stress, are two popular hypotheses nowadays. This steroid, namely cortisol, has many hazard effects, directly or indirectly in hypocampus, as well as its role in the contribution of neuron death.
