Abstrak
The purpose of this study was to examine the degree that family therapists apply cybernetics and General System Theory when conceptualizing clinical data. Furthermore, the study explored the relationships between levels of systems thinking and age, gender, highest degree earned, year degree was earned, method of gaining licensure, length of time licensed, AAMFT membership, supervisor status, sequence of training, and emphasis of systems theory during clinical training and supervision, as well as actual clinical experiences. A total of 143 LMFTs from Texas participated in the study by formulating clinical hypotheses and treatment strategies relative to an intact family of three, and by providing information related to demographics, education, training, and professional experience. For this study, an instrument was developed for the purpose of assessing systemic thinking. The instrument consisted of a five-level ordinal scale ranging from an individual orientation to holistic systems thinking and was especially sensitive to linear versus circular causality. Raters were used to rate the responses. The ratings indicated that whereas 23% worked from an individual orientation, the majority of participants included more than one individual in their assessment. However, 52% of the participants preferred to think in terms of linear causality, with only 4% having been rated at or beyond the level of circular causality. The remaining 21% seemed to be somewhere between linear and circular thinking, that is best described by the science of cybernetics. To analyze the data, a bivariate correlation matrix was used as well as a multivariate analysis known as categorical regression with optimal scaling. Important relationships between systemic thinking and education, training, licensure, supervisor status, and training were not revealed. Age and the percentage of time spent doing couples therapy were shown to be the strongest predictors of systems thinking. The findings suggested that family therapists may rely less on systems theory throughout the literature, and furthermore, little is known as to the factors that may not influence systems thinking in relation to circular causality.
