Abstract
Parent training has been demonstrated to be effective in changing child behaviors. This study measures the effectiveness of the Methods of Mothering: Training in Parenting Styles (MOM: Tips) program on both parent and child behaviors as perceived by parents. Participants were members of a parenting group for parents of children in Title 1. Twenty treatment group mothers were trained in four parenting styles from the MOM: Tips program. The treatment group mothers were trained in four parenting styles: Parents As Tutors, Discipline, Monitoring, and Self-management. This group along with ten control group mothers rated themselves before and after the training on their parenting skills under these styles. They rated their children's behavior on three constructs: achievement, motivation, and conduct. The control group received no parent training. Parents in the treatment group rated themselves as well as their children as changing significantly more than the control group. In addition, treatment integrity was assessed with the treatment group. The results from this measure indicated that certain parts of the MOM: Tips program were more difficult to implement than others were.
