Abstract
Previous research has found that an association exists between marital conflict and various types of parenting behavior, including overreactive and lax discipline styles. The present study was an experimental examination of whether marital conflict causes maternal anger, which in turn disrupts parenting. Forty couples were randomly assigned to have neutral or conflictual marital discussions. After the discussions, mothers rated their level of anger and subsequently interacted with their difficult-to-manage toddlers. Mothers in the conflict condition reported experiencing higher levels of anger after the marital discussions than mothers in the neutral condition. Within the conflict condition, husbands' hostility during the marital discussion was significantly associated with subsequent maternal anger. However, maternal anger was not significantly associated with observed parenting styles during the subsequent mother-child interactions and parenting styles did not differ across the experimental conditions. Clinical and research implications of the present study are discussed.
