Abstract
The psychological impact of working with traumatized populations upon those in the helping professions, particularly counselors, has been discussed in a variety of ways in the literature. Primarily this discourse has taken the form of countertransference issues and burnout studies. What has been inadequately addressed in the research to date is secondary traumatic stress reactions among trauma counselors. The purpose of this study was to examine the existence of secondary traumatic stress reactions in those counselors who work primarily with survivors of traumatic events and to determine if relationships existed between the counselor's own history of trauma, style of coping, and reported secondary traumatic stress reactions. The study focused on a sample of trauma counselors who work with survivors of crime-related, war-related, or natural disaster-related trauma (n = 54). Stepwise regression analyses were used to explore the relationship between reported secondary traumatic stress reactions, as measured by two separate post traumatic stress disorder instruments, and coping styles. These analyses revealed a significant relationship between both emotion-focused coping and problem-focused coping with the reported symptoms of secondary traumatic stress reactions. Specific coping strategies associated with reported secondary traumatic stress reactions included both Escape-avoidance and Positive Reappraisal. A comparison between those counselors not having experienced trauma versus those reporting a history of trauma was unable to be carried out due the group reporting no history of trauma containing only two subjects while the group reporting a history or trauma containing only two subjects while the group reporting a history of trauma contained 52 subjects. Most subjects reported experiencing some symptoms of secondary traumatic stress reactions yet only two scored high enough on the post traumatic stress disorder instruments to be diagnosed with post traumatic stress reactions.
