Abstract
The interactions of children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder are frequently characterized as being at odds with the wishes of others and the task demands of the situation. This pattern of responding to the environment on the part of the child with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder makes management of daily tasks, social interaction and compliance with parent requests frequent points of contention. Recently, this picture of conflict has become more complicated as heritability studies have identified a large percentage of the parents of children with these difficulties as having poor attention and impulse control themselves. This finding has led some to speculate that parent symptomatology may be affecting child management in untoward ways and exacerbating the behavioral problems of the child with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. The present study examined the relationship between the impulsivity of mothers of boys with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and the interactions of these mothers with their sons. Subjects were 30 5-12 year-old boys and their mothers. Of these 30 pairs, 10 were comprised of boys with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and impulsive mothers; 10 boys with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and their non-impulsive mothers; and 10 normal boys with non-impulsive mothers. Each mother-son dyad was observed during a 15-minute structured-task situation. Parenting behaviors and child compliance were coded from the interaction. A self-report measure was also administered to address parenting styles. Comparisons of impulsive and non-impulsive mothers of boys with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder to non-impulsive mothers of normal control boys revealed that the former issued commands, repeated more instructions, and exhibited less nurturance than the latter. Boys with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder were found to comply less to command and to engage in more non-compliant and negative behaviors than normal controls boys. Further analyses indicated that when interacting with their sons with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, impulsive mothers engaged in more negative behaviors, issued a greater number of commands, delivered a greater number of instructional behaviors and delivered a greater number of repetitions of these instructions than non-impulsive mothers of control boys. The sons with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder responded to their impulsive mothers with less compliance behaviors and more non-compliance and negative behaviors than the normal control boys with non-impulsive mothers. These results are discussed in terms of their potential in addressing parent symptomatology as a component of treating children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.
