Abstract
This study examined the influence of strategic information systems planning (SISP) success on organizational decision-making with respect to information technology (IT) resource allocation. Strategic IS planning success and IT purchase order decisions made by chief information officers (CIO) and information systems managers within seven different United States Air Force (USAF) medical treatment facilities (MTF) were evaluated. Evidence from the seven case studies supported the hypothesized relationship between SISP success and IT resource allocation decision success. In general, successful strategic information systems planning processes were associated, with perceived success with respect to IT resource allocation decision-making. Organizations with more successful SISP processes tended to produce more thorough and more frequently-updated IT plans, and then used their plans to guide resource allocation decision-making. It was also evident that organizations with successful SISP were better able to cope with decision-making constraints.
