Abstract
Euglena gracilis was grown in various nutritional media and the ultrastructural changes were observed by using Transmission Electron Microscope. This study revealed that Euglena gracilis can grow under anaerobic conditions and presence of ethyl alcohol in the medium suggests that this organism ferments. The function of mitochondria is unknown under these conditions and requires further investigation. The effects of nitrogen limitation on development of chloroplastic material were also studied by growing Euglena in glucose media with isoleucine. Two cultures, one grown in glucose medium and the second one in starvation medium, of naturally colorless Astasia longa were examined with electron microscope for the possible presence of plastids. Possible proplastid-like structures were observed in both cultures which were bounded by a double membrane.
