This paper analyzes the causative constructions in Madurese. The major theory applied is the causative typology proposed by Comrie (1989) in which there are two parameters in determining causatives, namely, morphosyntactic and semantic parameters. Based on the morphosyntactic parameter, this paper presents the systematic change of predicates from non-causative verbs (transitive and intransitive) to causative ones. The analysis also includes the logical structures (Van Val in dan LaPolla (1997)) of each causative type. Based on the morphosyntactic parameter, Madurese has three types of causatives: analytical, morphological, and lexical. From the semantic parameter point of view, there are two features which can be used to differentiate the types of causative in Madurese: the degree of control retained, by the causee and the mediacy of the relationship between cause and effect. From the degree of control retained by the causee, there are two kinds of causatives, namely, true causative and permissive causative. Meanwhile, from the mediacy of the relationship between cause and effect, Madurese has direct and indirect causatives. Further, from the relationship between forms of causative constructions and duration needed from cause to effect, morphological causatives in Madurese tend to be direct while analytical causatives tend to be indirect.
