Isi artikelHuman beings are often defined as thinking animals. This definition emphasizes the thinking potential and does not claim that every one is able to think critically. It stands to reason that education is defined as a systematic and deliberate effort to produce critical and creative students. Empirically, critical thinking varies depending on their cultural background and on the level of democracy exercised in the process of education. The survey revealed that graduate as well as undergraduate students of UPI believed the current national education does transfer knowledge, yet it fails to provide students with critical thinking skills. This paper discusses language as a means of critical and creative thinking and education as a process of intellectualizing. Based on the previous research and his teaching experience, the writer suggests the following: (1) critical thinking be offered as an undergraduate course at teacher training colleges, especially in language departments, and (2) democratic teaching be practiced in educational settings.
