Isi artikelGlutamate (glu), an excitatory aminoacid neurotransmitter is abundantly present in the brain of mammals, as well as in dietary protein. Endogenous glutamate is thought to be a major neurotransmitter. The results indicate that neonatal Monosodium L-glutamate (MSG) treatment produces neuronal damage in the circumventricular organs (CVO) by increasing lipid preoxidation and in agreement with the hypothesis that excitotoxins may generate free radicals in causing neurotoxicity. In this study, MSG and equiosmotic concentrations of sodim chloride were administered subcutaneous to adult rats in order to observe the effects on food and water intake. MSG, a commonly used for additive, induces convulsive disorders in rats and amphibian Bufo spp. Neonatal administration of neurotoxic doses of MSG to rats causes neuronal necrosis of the hypothalamus along with behavioral abnormalities. The results indicate that exposure to MSG in early life of rats could lead to subtle behavioral aberrations in late adulthood.
