Isi artikelOcular injuries is the most cause of monocular blindness in children. This study is done to describe the incidence of ocular injuries in children 13 years and younger, and its clinical characteristic. A descriptive-retrospective study was carried out based on the medical records gathered from January until December 2005 in dr. Saiful Anwar Hospital Malang. Records of 88 children with 89 incidents were included in the study which 1 was initially treated for bilateral ocular trauma. A total of 88 patients were recorded, 52 (59.09%) were boys and 36 (40.91%) were girls. The age ranging between 6 months and 13 years, with average 6.17 ± 3.27 years. Non perforating injuries (83.14%) were more frequent than perforating one (16.86%). Of those with nom perforating injuries, the most frequent causes were sand, dust and wood particles (12%), followed by first (11%). Knife (30%) and bamboo (21%) represented the most frequent causes of perforating injuries. Subconjungtival haemorrhage accompanied 49.4% of ocular injuries, while corneal rupture were found in 13.48%. Most non perforating injuries did not cause any visual impairment, with 63.51% of its cases having visual acuity more than 3/60. Ocular injuries in children predominantly affects boys. It occurred commonly at school age (ranging between 6-10 years). Non perforating injuries was the most common type, in which the main cause were sand, dust or wood particle. On the other hand, knife and bamboo were the most frequent cause of perforating injuries. Health and eye safety education may be important to prevent ocular injuries in children.
